4 Simple Wood Projects to Build With Kids

We love to spend time with our kids so today I’m going to show you 4 easy woodworking projects to build with your kids. They are very simple to do and with your company, nobody gets hurt. Students, preschoolers, kids 7 or 12 years old and more can participate!

Not all shown tools can be used by every children, evaluate if your kid can participate or not in some parts of the project. Some kids listens and uses them carefully and others not, so please, be smart and be safe.

HOW TO MAKE A TIC TAC TOE BOARD OUT OF WOOD

The first woodworking ideas for kids is a board game, it is very fun to use in the afternoon or on a picnic and it’s a cool woodwork project to do with kids, so we are going to teach you how to build it so you can play with your little one. To Make a DIY Tic-Tac-Toe Game you will need one piece of wood approximately 1.5″ x 6.5″ x 6.5″ (4cm x 17cm x 17cm) it can be walnut wood. Wooden dowel 3/4″ (2cm) in diameter you can paint them in different colors or use two different types of wood.

1- Saw the edges of the board

You can use a hand saw, table saw, or miter saw and cut in the sizes previously said

2- Mark the lines of the table game

And with a hand saw or this mini table saw table saw, cut the board lines at a depth of 1/8″ (0,3cm)

3- Mark and drill the holes for the peg

Mark them at the middle of the square with the diameter of the dowel and drill. With a drill press, you can set the depth stop so all the holes have the same depth.

4- Cut ten 2 ″ (5 cm) long wooden dowels.

Cut five of each color or wood so you have a replacement if you lose one.

5- Smooth the edges and apply linseed oil or paint

Sand the wood and with a router round and smooth the edges. Apply linseed oil to the wood and you’ll have your table game finished.

HOW TO MAKE A COOL BIRDHOUSE STEP BY STEP

I love this one, your kids will be very excited, it is a cool woodwork activity to do with the children. Can be used to attract bluebirds, swallows, chickadees, nuthatches, warblers, woodpeckers, wrens, and other birds. Use cedar or pine, both are good options.

STEPS TO BUILD A BIRDHOUSE

1- Cut the wood with these bird box plans

2- Drill the entrance hole

Like it was told above drill the hole with a diameter of 1,5.

3- Assemble the sides and roof of the birdhouse

Before assembly, make 5 holes in the backside in a dice shape. Then glue and screws to attach the roof, front, and back of the birdhouse, start with the roof. This step will be easier with corner clamps that hold the wood pieces secure and firm while you are screwing and gluing.

4- Join the PVC Pipe or a coffee can

Drill a couple of holes of ¼” (0,5cm) for drainage, next insert one of these two between the two sides of the birdhouse, and below it insert the threaded rod. This will hold the PVC pipe and if you remove it you have access to clean out the inside of the house.

5- Paint or add linseed oil to your birdhouse.

When you hang it, try to leave it in a place that doesn't swing wildly on a windy day because the birds will avoid it. Use the wire shorter or use a support.

DIY WOODEN TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER

This is very easy and involves your children in the job. You just need a piece of wood, then they draw something in it and with a table saw or a jigsaw cut the shape they draw. Depend on how old is your kid you can let him do it with supervisión.

Now make the holes for the toothbrush, this part your kids can do it just make sure everything is clamped very well and drill the hole.

The next part is painting, a thing they love to do. Let them be creative and with this step, the work will be done.

HOW TO MAKE CURSIVE WOODEN LETTERS PUZZLE

This wood project it’s simple and easy for the kids too. On a thick wooden board draw in cursive your letters or words and with a jigsaw (or scroll saw) remove the inside of the letters and divide them from each other. Sand the letters and the template and attach in the backside a thin wooden plank. Paint them with the color that you want. In this case, I use black for the template and linseed oil for the letters, you can use any color.

Following the steps, you will have your Wooden Puzzle done ready for your kids to play.
